Department Responsibilities and Personnel

The primary mission of the Department of Public Safety falls into three areas of responsibility; Police, Fire, and Emergency medical response.  The Department delivers these emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days per year.

Full Time Sworn Public Safety Officers

The Department of Public Safety is staffed with a Captain, Lieutenant, one Sergeant, one Corporal/Fire Inspector, one School Resource Officer and four fulltime Public Safety Officers. Each of these fulltime employees is certified as a Police Officer, Firefighter and Medical First Responder. The staff is split between two shifts. The first shift is between 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. The second shift is between 6 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Part Paid Fire and Emergency Medical Personnel

There are presently 15 part-paid firefighter positions within the Department of Public Safety led by our Fire Chief Donald Middleton. These part-time employees are on call to answer fire and medical emergencies in the City of Essexville. They are certified through the State of Michigan as Firefighters and Medical First Responders.

Vacation House Watch: Home owners who wish to advise the Department of Public Safety that they will be on vacation for an extended period of time may obtain a form by using the links below. The form should be submitted prior to leaving on vacation and may be mailed to City Hall, emailed to the Lieutenant, delivered to City Hall or placed in the drop box in the City Hall Entryway.
